The rose of Sebastopol
In 1855, Rosa Barr, a young Englishwoman, travels to the Crimea determined to work as a nurse. She never returns. Three people have been intimately connected with her: her cousin, a soldier and adventurer; a doctor, traumatised by the war and harbouring a secret passion; and her cousin Mariella, who is left to discover the truth. Russia, 1854: the Crimean War grinds on, and as the bitter winter draws near, the battlefield hospitals fill with dying men.
