Traditional Croatian Customs

Initial meetings use a standard formal greeting which includes a handshake, eye contact and a suitable salutation for the current time of day. Only friends and family member use first names so in all other cases, unless advised otherwise, it is wise to use a title and surname.

Close friends may greet with an embrace and a kiss on each cheek, never initiated this yourself though you must wait for the Croatian to do so first. For social gatherings the hosts will greet the women first then the men in approximate age (oldest-youngest) order.
If you are invited to someone home then you should always bring a bouquet of followers for the hostess, the host can be given either a bottle of wine of a box of chocolates. Although it is worth noting not to give chrysanthemums as they are traditionally used at funerals and may offend your hostess. Also ensure that there are an odd number of stems in the bouquet.
Meal times are fairly relaxed however there are some standards that need to be observed and respected.
• Always wait until you are shown where to sit.
• Table manners are the same as on the continent so the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating.
• Never begin you meal until the host has signalled to do so.
• Leaving a small amount of food on your plate will indicate that you are finished, and if you are offered a second helping refusing will not be consider and insult by the host.
• At more formal meals a napkin should be unfolded and placed on the lap.
When it comes to business the initial relationship will be very formal, however this may well change over time.
• Use the handshake, eye contact greeting and always wait for a woman to extend her hand first. Use the proper salutation for the time of day and remember to use title (professional if known or applicable) and surname until instructed otherwise.
• Business card exchange does not have an specific ritual or custom that needs observing however it is considered thoughtful to have one side translated into Croatian.
Communication is direct and straightforward, although it is important to be careful of your choice of words and be mindful not to cause offence. Again the level of relationship will determine how direct you can be, in the early stages always remain diplomatic.
